Yes, another ’07 pinot but completely different from the Sonoma-Cutrer. This is by Domaine Potel, subtitled ‘Vielles Vignes’. On the back label is the message ‘a Mon Pere Gérard Potel 1936-97’ and the bottle number 000318. There is an irritating wax seal around the neck. All of which might make you think it is a special bottle of burgundy. It isn’t. At about £16 (from the Wine Society) how could it be?
Not as pale as some burgundies, little nose, some, rather dry, fruit and a rather faded pinot taste. No tannin, not made to last – which makes the wax seal all the more mysterious. However an enjoyable and easy drink – only 12.5% – but unlikely to convert anyone, possibly me, who thinks most red burgundy a waste of money.
